Why was he free to kill?
A PSYCHOPATH who slashed a man's throat had been allowed to live in the community even though doctors knew he was dangerous, a report has revealed. Matthew Steel (21), from Scorer Street, Lincoln, met a psychiatrist just nine days before stabbing to death 35-year-old Phillip Beardmore at his home in Walnut Place, Lincoln.
 

'Keep rapist behind bars'
A RAPIST who attacked his teenage victim in a dark alleyway should never be freed, says his girlfriend of 10 years. Evelyn Taylor (30) today pleaded with the authorities to keep Mark Anthony Smith behind bars as long as possible. Smith - the father of Miss Taylor's three children - was yesterday sentenced to life for raping an 18-year-old girl in what police have described as a "despicable act".

 
This should never have happened...
HIGHWAYS experts today pledged to investigate the safety of a busy crossroads after a young man was killed just yards from his home. The move comes as his family today told how they feared there would be an accident at the junction. The family of trial biker Karl Cody were devastated when the 22-year-old was knocked from his moped and killed in Burton Road, Lincoln.

Our Peter takes the honours
ECHO columnist Peter Washbourn has been made an MBE by the Queen in the New Year Honours List. Mr Washbourn, who worked as an Echo photographer for 40 years, receives the honour in recognition of his services to Lincolnshire. The 66-year-old is known throughout the county as an author, historian and lifetime advocate of the county.

 
Operator who saved trapped family
THE MOTHER of two young children has met the fire service operator who saved her family from a terrifying house fire. Victoria Featherstone (22) and her two children survived being trapped in a house blaze by following the advice of leading fire control operator Oonagh Speed over the telephone.
 

Clubbers warned: watch your drink
THE NIGHTCLUB managers and police are warning revellers to be on their guard after a spate of spiked drink attacks. Concern is growing over a drug known as GHB which leaves victims drowsy, confused and in some instances, comatose. At least one teenager ended up in hospital after her drink was spiked in a Lincoln club.
